Euromaidan’s One Month Anniversary

Reporting Euromaidan events, the journalists of central TV channels tend to focus on effects, thus watering down the essence of protesters’ demands. There haven’t been any expert commentaries yet. Media professionals seem to be satisfied with the comments of opposition and power despite their manipulative or fake character.

RESUME

Preparing materials for airing, journalists go on ignoring expert opinion. Shallow comments seem to satisfy them. They do not see the necessity to dig deeper. The balance of opinions is often violated, whereas the statements delivered by various speakers remain unfounded. The number of manipulations in news items is increasing dramatically. On the one hand, one may consider that editorial staff makes mistakes while preparing materials. On the other hand, the number of mistakes is critically growing.

THE MOST CATCHING TRAITS OF NEWS RELEASES

  1. There are hardly any expert comments on events.
  2. The materials demonstrating higher officials are dominating. Most of them have no essential information pretext.
  3. No attention is paid to events associated with harsh statements of the European politicians.
  4. The items are generally supported with neutral sound bites or inappropriate sound bites of opposition and Euromaidan activists.
  5. The number of important issues ignored by news is critically growing.

The list of suppressed issues and items with manipulative traits

December 20, 2013, Friday

  1. In Verkhovna Rada, Prosecutor General of Ukraine Viktor Pshonka reported on the investigation of the Euromaidan dispersal case (December 20, 2013). (Source: UNIAN).

All the channels covered the event.

Facts by ICTV, 18:45

From the very beginning, the item bristles with inaccuracies and manipulations, thus addling the audience not aware of the Prosecutor’s speech.

Olena Frolyak, narrator: “It was a hot day in Verkhovna Rada. Prosecutor General of Ukraine spoke to the deputies. Viktor Pshonka does not know it yet who ordered to dispense Maidan. Investigation goes on. Still, Prosecutor General admits that some of the Berkut representatives have abused their authority. Bloody events on Maidan are interpreted as a great provocation of radical groupings. Viktor Pshonka says that Security Service is now investigating the case concerning the infringement of constitutional order in Ukraine that took place on November, 30 against the two opposition leaders, Arseniy Yatsenyuk and Oleg Tyahnybok. Vitaly Klitschko was absent at Maidan that day.”

In reality, Pshonka DID NOT NAME those involved in the case. According to his words, the case was opened not because of the infringement of constitutional order, but because of their CALLS for forcible overthrow of power – not on November, 30, but during the last few protest actions.

What is more, it is known that on November, 30 at 4:00, when militia attacked Maidan, ALL THE LEADERS of opposition were absent, not only Vitaly Klitschko. The narrator does not mention one more possible participant, Oleksandr Turchynov. Probably, the reason is that he is not one of the ‘three leaders’.

Details by Inter, 20:00

Viktor Pshonka, Prosecutor General of Ukraine: “All in all, 40 criminal proceedings have been initiated since November, 24 to December, 14.”

On the one hand, the Inter correspondent, as opposed to her colleagues, has mentioned that 40 criminal cases opened recently refer to several episodes. On the other hand, the lead and sound bite with Prosecutor General pretend that investigation of the events of November, 30 has resulted in the initiation of criminal proceedings for twenty days of protest.

Manipulation. While Pshonka does not name anyone, the journalist focuses attention on certain representatives of opposition. It creates an illusion that the oppositionists are really under examination. However, it is not known for certain.

Events by Ukraine, 19:00

The sound bite describes actions of investigation agency concerning mass disorders in Kyiv. The information was absent at other channels except First National Channel. Pshonka’s words justify that the group of suspects can include both Berkut privates and higher officials. Other channels did not pay attention to this information.

Reproducing Pshonka’s statement, no channel has provided a sound bite with people who suffered in Euromaidan dispense. Nobody asked Yatsenyuk whether he has any official notice of being under examination. Nobody asked Pshonka about the source of his data. Only ICTV and Inter have informed of opposition creating a committee of inquiry within Rada.

There was no Klitschko’s opinion on why he was not in the list of participants either.

A full range of theses of manipulative character have been delivered by ICTV journalists.

Any TV channel hasn’t said a word on the fact that opposition has accused Andrei Kluyev of ordering Kyiv City State Administration to install the New Year Tree on the night of November, 30. Kluyev is known to force Kyiv City State Administration and to control the members of the top brass via his deputy Vladymyr Sivkovych.

Other important issues of the day

  1. The proposition of Association and Free Trade Area is still waiting (UNIAN).

The information was reproduced by ICTV, TRC Ukraine and First National.

  1. The Appeal Court has left the activist Andrei Dzindzia and his lawyer under arrest for two months (Ukrayinska Pravda).

The information was reproduced by 1+1, Inter and TRC Ukraine.

  1. President still has not signed the law on amnesty of mass disorders participants in the center of Kyiv.

Only 1+1 has spread the information.

December 21, 2013, Saturday

  1. Euromaidan’s one month anniversary (December 21, 2013)

Facts by ICTV

The news release was opened with a short item on what Euromaidan is.

Neither narrator, nor sound bite inform what the current demands of the protesters are. It is obvious that they have changed over the last month.

Events by TRC Ukraine

Olena Kot, narrator: “A month on the barricades – this is how long Euromaidan is lasting. On November, 21 those who disagree with the denial of European integration began to gather in the main square of the country. Today, meanwhile, the Orthodox walked through the capital’s centre as they are against Europe. The report of Irina Romalijska will tell about today’s events in the streets of Kyiv.”

The item includes a faulty statement, i.e. generalization about the Orthodox. Not all the Orthodox are against Europe. The journalist applies value judgements.

It should be recalled that describing the situation at Euromaidan in the live transmission, the TSN correspondent Ivan Grebenyuk said: “It is important to note that sanitary situation at Euromaidan is now stable enough. As you remember, a few days ago there were complaints that public utilities refused to collect garbage from Maidan. At the moment, situation is improved.”

State channel makes a little bit another accents.

As opposed to his colleagues, the journalist of First National Channel does not let the Maidan opponents from Mariyinsky Park speak. It is not reported that one of the leaders of Anti-Maidan Kalashnikov supposes the participants to come back home on New Year.

On the whole, the channels have presented sketchy items in which they inform in what way and with what demands Euromaidan appeared. However, none of the journalists has explained whether the protesters have any further program and what conditions they lay down to the power now. In brief, live items wash away the essence.

  1. The doors to Europe are opened for Ukraine, but not with the current power (Deutsche Welle).

Only ICTV has given the information.

  1. Russia has voiced the three months guarantees in case Ukraine does not sign the agreement with the EU (UNIAN).

Only ICTV reproduced the information.

Inna Shevchenko, narrator: “Russia will be always able to call upon Ukraine to return the $15 milliard loan because it has been executed by extremely harsh legal terms. Such a statement has been made by First Deputy Prime Minister of Russia Igor Shuvalov in the air of Russia-24 channel. It is talked of the agreements of December, 17 according to which Russia buys the Ukrainian eurobonds to the sum of $15 milliard. Shuvalov admits that this is a political step. But he also noted that this step is mutually beneficial. According to his words, Ukraine urgently needs economic sanitation, for which the credit has been just laid out. Russia, in turn, will be able to propagate their own economic interests through common enterprises and cooperation. Assistance given to Ukraine does not depend on which union Ukraine will join, either Custom Union or European Union, Shuvalov claims.

The only position is reflected in the item (Russia’s one). It seems rational to include expert comments as well as opinions of the representatives of the Ukrainian government.

  1. Yanukovych has signed the law on peaceful protesters’ exempt from liability.

All the channels reproduced the information without off-screen commentary. There have been some similar materials concerning the document subscription itself and its content in brief. The reflection was rather shallow, probably because full-value items on the bill had been already broadcasted by the channels previously.
